Four Tasmanian civil construction projects are in the running to be recognised as Australia’s best when the Civil Construction Federation’s National Earth Awards are held in Canberra tomorrow night.

The National Earth Awards are the Australian Civil Contractors Federation’s annual awards celebrating significant achievements in one of Australia’s most important industries and represent the next step for Tasmanian projects which were successful in the State Earth Awards held in August this year.

Tasmanian Civil Contractors Federation CEO Rachael Matheson said this year’s national awards featured a strong range of Tasmanian entries.

“When you look back at the nominees for this year’s Tasmanian awards you can see why the judges had such a difficult time choosing winners in each category,” Ms Matheson said.

“Each nomination is not only judged on the end result or how the project looks. Instead, a range of factors are taken into account such as innovation, safety, people development and training as well as environmental consideration.

“Our industry is constantly lifting the bar and raising standards across all these measures and each of the Tasmanian nominees deserve credit for that.

“Now the projects which were successful in our Tasmanian awards have the opportunity for recognition on a national scale, which is both great exposure for the construction companies involved, as well as fantastic for the Tasmanian civil construction industry as a whole.

“The civil construction sector is the absolute backbone of the Tasmanian community and economy.  Most of the public infrastructure that Tasmanians rely on everyday has been built by one of our members and is a testament to their skill, expertise and commitment to the community.

“Our members are part of an industry that directly employs over 16,000 Tasmanians and supports thousands of businesses around the state. Our members aren’t just building Tasmania’s infrastructure, they are building Tasmania’s future.

“The Tasmanian Civil Contractors Federation wishes the contractors behind the four Tasmanian projects nominated for the National Earth Awards the best of luck.

“We are proud that Tasmania’s civil construction sector can be represented on the national stage by such outstanding projects and we would be thrilled if one of these projects can bring a national award back to Tasmania.”
